  • 1 pound 2 ounces white raddish
  • 1 tablespoon moong dal
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic
  • 1 teaspoon crushed dried red chilies
  • 1 teaspoon salt


  • Rinse, peel and roughly slice the white radish, together with its leaves, if using.
  • Place the white radish, the leaves if using and the moong dals in a large saucepan and pour over the water. Bring to a boil and cook over a medium heat until the white radish has softened enough to handle.
  • Drain the white radish thoroughly and squeeze out any excess water.
  • Heat the vegetables oil in a pan. Add the onion, garlic, crushed red chilies and salt and fry over a medium heat for 5 minutes.
  • Stir the white radish mixture into the spiced onion mixture and combine well. Reduce the heat and continue cooking for 5 minutes.
  • Transfer the white radish curry to individual serving plates and serve hot with chapatis.
